Pass the Garlic please!

Wild Garlic and Other Alliums

Allium canadense

Liliaceae (lily family)

Species of Allium are among the most ancient cultivated plants. Thousands of years ago the early Babylonians, Chinese, and Egyptians noted their use for foods and medicines. Allium possibly comes from early Celtic origins; the word all meant "pungent." Canadense denotes that the plant is native to Canada or the northeastern United States. The great lily family holds many healing and ornamental plants like aloe, asparagus, daylily, and trillium.

Perhaps four hundred species of strongly odorous (when bruised) perennial bulbs in the genus Allium are native in the Northern Hemisphere. It is often hard to tell some species apart because their differences are so subtle. A. canadense is perhaps the most common and widespread species, found growing wild from southern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and from the eastern shores to the Rocky Mountains.

Traditional uses:

Wild garlic, A. canadense, is also called wild onion, wild meadow leek, prairie onion, crow onion, or Canada onion. Early explorers noted many American Indian food and medicine uses for wild onions and garlic. Archaeological evidence in North America shows that native people were eating alliums more than six thousand years ago. The Menomini and Meskwaki favored wild garlic as a choice food, especially during winter, as did many Great Lakes Indians. The Winnebago called it "shinhop," the Pawnee called it "osidiwa," and the Tewa Puebloans called it "akonsi." Indeed, there are countless Indian names for this native staple food, flavoring, and medicine. The city of Chicago is said to get its name from the Winnebago Indian word for wild leeks, shika'ko.

Wild garlic, Allium canadense, prospers in most soils, especially sandy bottomlands. It will grow up to two feet tall, bearing tiny pink star-like blossoms in top clusters during spring. Unlike many alliums, the leaves are not hollow, long, and bladelike; they grow from the base at earth level from the small, oval underground bulb. After the bloom, the top grows into numerous tiny
bulblets with long, threadlike tails. These spicy hot additions to summer foods both flavour and heal.

Field garlic, A. vineale, is an introduced species that has become widespread in the American wild. This one can grow up to three feet tall and blooms pink or white in clusters mixed with tiny bulblets.

Wild onion, A. stellatum, is also widespread across North America. Showy umbels of six-point lavender flowers top each small bulb in the spring and can stand two feet tall above grass-like green leaves.

Nodding wild onion, A. cernuum, grows across the northern regions, often in distinct colonies. Blooms top the two-foot slender stems during summer. Their classic "nodding" characteristic and delicate pink or white blossom clusters help distinguish this species.

Wild leeks, A. tricoccum also called ramps, usually produce two or three leaves in early spring. The whitish to creamy yellow blossom clusters follow in June and July. Wild leeks are often found in little clusters or colonies in cool woodlands. The leaves are noted spring vegetables, as are the more odorous bulbs.

Modern uses:

Cultivated onions, A. cepa, and garlic, A. sativum, have been garden and gourmet favourites for many centuries as well as being long acknowledged for their medicinal virtues. Modern research has confirmed their antibacterial qualities plus their ability to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Wild onion and wild garlic are antibiotic and anti-inflammatory as well as stimulating to the circulation. Eaten as foods, they help prevent colds and even tooth decay. Warmed onion or garlic oil, when dropped into the ear canal, will relieve an earache. This oil has even been used cosmetically to stimulate hair growth The alliums are valuable systemic insecticides, as eating them makes an individual less appealing to stinging and biting insects

Cautions:

The essential oils from the bulbs can be irritating.

Growth needs and propagation:

The alliums favour rich, moist earth but will grow almost anywhere, especially under cultivation. They can be propagated from both seeds and bulbs, but quicker, more robust results come from planting the bulbs, which are available from many native plant suppliers. Alliums do well in groupings of related species, such as a cluster of wild garlic and a colony of wild leeks.

Companions:

Wild onion, garlic, leeks, and nodding wild onion grow well with moccasin flower, maidenhair fern, yarrow, and many other plants in the medicine wheel garden.

Introducing the Goji berry

The Goji berry has been acclaimed a natural health elixir by health experts all over. The medicinal properties of this humble berry have been a secret confined to the Himalayan areas of Asia - Mongolia, China and Tibet. For thousands of years, traditional medicine in these areas has included this ingredient in the treatment of various diseases and also as a garnish in food. Recent research and studies by western experts have pointed out various health benefits of this wonder fruit.

Of course, with any new discovery, a lot of exaggerated claims are made and this fruit is no exception. It has been claimed to cure anything from cancer to impotence. Though many such unsupported claims exist, they should not be allowed to blemish its reputation, which has been used in medicine for thousands of years. Here are some proven health benefits of this natural wonder.

Nutrient Content

Goji berries have a very high nutrition content. A normal daily serving of this berry has more vitamin C than an equivalent serving of orange, (it is also a good source of the B vitamins), higher amounts of betacarotene than an equivalent serving of carrots and higher iron content than an equivalent serving of steak. They have also been found to be antioxidant rich - it is hard to miss the term "free radicals" these days; these harmful substances damage useful cells of the human body. Antioxidants have been found to be the best combatants of free radicals. In addition to all this, they are also good sources of polysaccharides which have been proven to strengthen the functioning of the human immune system, potassium, and have as many as eighteen different types of amino acids required by the body. So, in short, this berry is a nutrient mine, with enough nutritious content to take care of the immune system, keep skin healthy and glowing and aid in the maintenance of a healthy heart.

Cancer Cure?

Now let's take a look at that cancer curing claim; No, Goji berries can't just miraculously cure cancer. That is just a load of tosh. What they have been proven to do is fight cancer due to their very high antioxidant content. In addition, they have been found to contain Germanium, which has been known to have anti-cancer properties. Studies conducted in Japan have shown that this substance is efficacious in the treatment of cancers of the lung, cervix, liver, testicles and uterus. Another interesting point to note is the finding that these berries have the capability to increase production of g-interferon in the body. Research has proved that this substance is successful at destroying cancerous cells in the body.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are innumerable researches and clinical trials going on to test the effectiveness of the Goji berry's extract in the treatment of various ailments. One thing is for certain though; it certainly won't hurt to include a small serving of this super-fruit everyday at breakfast!

What are the best acne treatments?

Which are the Best Acne Treatments? It Depends

By Peter Crump

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it’s not as simple as just listing the best acne treatments. That’s not because there’s no good acne treatments available, quite the opposite in fact, it’s just that there’s a few steps to take before deciding which are the best acne treatments for your acne.

Not everyone has the same acne problem and so the best acne cures for one person may not be the best acne cures for another. Acne attacks different people differently. For some, it’s just a mild attack which will be managed quite satisfactorily with some simple facial cleansing routines. No more required. No need to search out any acne treatments, certainly no need to investigate the best acne treatments.

For others acne can be a serious problem indeed. Acne can be serious enough to produce scars which, if left untreated, can be emotionally and psychologically distressing. These people certainly need active acne intervention, and the best acne treatments available.

How do you know which category you are in? Consult your doctor. It’s not always easy to know whether your acne is a simple passing phase which can be easily controlled, or something which needs serious intervention before it’s too late. And your doctor will tell you the best acne treatments for your individual needs. The best acne treatments for YOU.

And not all acne medications work the same way for everybody. The best acne medications for some people may not work at all for others. This is just the way it is, that’s not restricted to acne medications.

So, often, finding the best acne treatments can be a difficult process. The most highly recommended treatment may not work at all for you, but work well with your best friend. That’s life, you need to move on to try another one until you find the best acne medication that works for you.

And remember that acne isn’t a condition that is cured by a simple application of an acne medication. Acne isn’t cured, it’s controlled, it’s managed. Acne decides for itself when it is finished. Up to then you need to be active in managing it. Once you body says “enough” then it’s over. So the best acne treatments are treatments which need to be continued as necessary. Don’t expect to just apply a treatment and “hey presto” no more acne. Sorry, it’s not that simple.

And adult acne? Which are the best treatments for adult acne? Same answer. It depends. The best treatments for adult acne are the same as the best acne treatments for teenagers. They are the treatments that work for you. After you have seen your doctor, had your acne checked out, tried one or more until you find the one that works, and then settled on that one. Then you’ve found YOUR best acne cure.

And, one final suggestion, don’t buy a suggested acne cure, apply it for a week and expect that your acne will be gone. It’s not that easy. Apply the product for at least 2 or 3 months, or longer as recommended, before you make any judgements. Acne takes a long time to develop, and a long time to control. Even the best acne treatments on the market take quite a while to work. And remember to apply them exactly as recommended.

So, in closing, what are the best acne treatments? See you doctor, then test and try until you find the one for you. Most of them work for some, and none of them work for everyone.

Find out more about Acne as well as Acne Cures and adult acne, acne skin care products, the best acne treatments and more at Peter’s website, Acne All Gone.

Fat Loss got you frustrated?

Rapid Fat Loss - 3 Dieting Myths

By Martha C. Johnson

Did you know that it is possible to lose up to 2lbs of fat every week? The World has become obese at a very fast pace and the numbers are continuing to grow. People aren't just eating more; they're also eating more of the wrong foods.

Starving Yourself:

You cannot lose weight and stay healthy by starving yourself because your body requires food to function. Losing weight the wrong way by not eating is actually worse for you than gaining weight. It will affect the way your brain functions and slow your metabolism down or even bring it to a complete stop.

No Fat:

People think that they need a low-fat or no-fat diet to lose weight. However, a third of your calories should come from fat. All cholesterol is not bad because we all need some blood cholesterol, which is used to build cells and make vital hormones. You just need to research the good cholesterol from the bad cholesterol.

Saturated fats found in food like meat, cheese, cream, butter and processed pastries tend to raise bad cholesterol. The bad cholesterol takes cholesterol to the arteries. Good cholesterol, transports cholesterol away from the arteries, back to the liver. A good choose would be unsaturated fats such as vegetable oils, nuts and seeds.

Meat Alone Builds Muscles:

Have you ever heard that you can't build muscles without meat? You need protein to build muscles and you can get protein from sources like nuts, cheese, and grains, just to name a few. Too much protein can damage the kidney because the body can only store a certain amount of protein. You can also have long-term side effects from too much protein.

These are many other dieting myths that you should become aware of before you begin a diet program. Keep in mind that your food intake and/or lack of food intake affect your brain functions. Once you learn the secrets to rapid weight loss, dieting no longer is difficult.

Always rely on a good program that would educate you and guide you to achieve the fat loss results that you are looking for. There are many reasons why people want to or need to loose fat. Statistics says 325,000 deaths are caused by obesity and that 64 percent of people in the U. S. are overweight. You may only want to lose a few inches or you may want or need to lose several inches. You will never see any results if you don't get started. Here is one of the best effective weight loss programs that would should you how loosing weight can actually be fun.

Diabetes Drug Concerns

15 Essential Diabetes Drug Tips

by: Sarah Henry

1. Consider lifestyle changes. Diabetes pills work best when used in conjunction with a healthy diet, exercise, and (if necessary) weight loss. In fact, lifestyle changes may lower -- or eliminate -- the need for diabetes medications.

2. Know the recommended blood glucose range. You'll know medications are working if blood glucose readings fall within the recommended range. Find out from the main diabetes care provider how often you or the person you're caring for should check blood sugar levels, and be sure to keep a record of the results. Generally speaking, a blood sugar reading before meals of between 70 and 140 milligrams per deciliter is desirable.

3. Know when it's time to take action. Find out from the diabetes doctor or educator how low or high blood sugar can go before it's important to take action. For many people, blood sugar is too low below 70 mg/dL and too high above 240 mg/dL. Make sure you know the signs of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia and how to treat either condition.

4. Ask specific dosage questions. Ask the doctor the following questions about medications. Write the response down somewhere handy, such as a medication notebook.

* When should the person I'm caring for take his diabetes pills: before a meal, with a meal, or after a meal?
* How often should he take the medicine?
* Should he take the drugs at the same time every day?
* What should he do if he misses a dosage?
* What side effects may occur?
* What should we do if he experiences side effects?

5. Consider switching medications. Diabetes pills don't work for everyone. And sometimes they lose effectiveness after a few months -- or after many years. There's no clear-cut reason why this happens; often switching to another drug or trying oral combination therapy can help.

6. Tell the doctor about all medical conditions. Most older adults have other medical conditions in addition to diabetes, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Make sure the patient's main diabetes doctor is aware of all illnesses, chronic conditions, allergies, or surgeries, and work with his diabetes healthcare team to set treatment goals for his care that complement his overall healthcare.

7. Keep a current medication list. Older adults with diabetes are at an increased risk for drug side effects and drug interactions, especially as the number of medications increases. Make sure the person in your care keeps an up-to-date medication list and that he brings it with him every time he sees any healthcare provider. Include every prescription medication and over-the-counter drug, vitamin, and herbal or homeopathic treatment and their dosages.

For example, many common medications used to treat high blood pressure also raise blood glucose. Other drugs, either on their own or by interacting with oral diabetes drugs that lower blood glucose, can make diabetes remedies more potent and lower blood glucose to dangerously low levels.

If the person you're caring for starts on a new medication and suddenly finds his blood glucose is significantly higher or lower than usual, ask his doctor to check out the possibility that the new medication is causing the unwanted effect. It's also important to check blood sugar more often after starting on a new drug for this reason.

8. Stick with one pharmacy. If possible, use the same pharmacy for all prescriptions. By having a complete record of all medications, the pharmacist can alert you, the patient, and his healthcare providers to possible interactions.

9. Report any side effects. A patient should report any side effects from medications to his healthcare provider and include the following details: how long they lasted, how severe they were, and what medications and what dosages he was taking at the time.

10. Compare prices. Costs can vary widely for different drugs at different places. Call around to a few pharmacies to find the best price for the pills, and ask your regular pharmacist to match a cheaper price if necessary. Some diabetes drugs are available in generic form; check with the pharmacist.

11. Check tablet strength. Another money-saving tip: Ask the doctor to prescribe the largest tablet strength suitable for the dose the patient needs. For example, a 500-milligram pill often costs much less than two 250-mg tablets. Use a pill splitter, available at drugstores, to cut the larger tablet into the appropriate dose (halves or quarters). One word of caution: Some extended-release drugs don't work properly if they're split, so always check with the pharmacist or doctor before cutting tablets.

12. Keep track of daily medications. Use a pillbox or some other system to keep track of daily drugs. Ask the pharmacist for suggestions and see our article "How to Help Someone With Diabetes Follow Medication Recommendations".

13. Throw out old drugs. Get rid of (by recycling if possible) outdated medications and those left over from prescriptions the person you're caring for no longer uses. Old drugs may lose their potency or interact with pills he's currently taking.

14. Know that drug types and dosages may need to change over time. Diabetes is a progressive condition, meaning it continues to change over time as a patient's insulin production steadily declines. The dose and type of pills most patients use to control the disease may need to be adjusted to reflect these bodily changes.

15. If at first you don't succeed. No one diabetes drug is best for every person, and what works for one person may not work for another. A patient's main diabetes doctor and others on his team can help him find diabetes medicines that best meet his overall treatment goals.

Looking for an Asthma or Allergy Remedy?

How to Use natural Remedies for Asthma or Allergies

Rudy Silva

A lot people have asthma. My daughter, 41 years, included. She has suffered from attacks for many years. Recently I encounter three natural remedies that I asked my daughter to try. I have not yet received a report on these, so I would like to pass them on to you. Here is the first one.

Boswellia

Boswellia, an herb, is known for its anti-inflammatory abilities and its usefulness in reduces the effects of bronchitis, asthma, cough, laryngitis, and fever. It comes from the resin of a tree in India and made into a pill or cream. It is best known for use in arthritis.

Recommended dose is: 150mg three times a day.

Yamoa

Yamoa is an herbal powder treatment for Asthma, which is derived from the bark of an African gum tree. It is available in capsule and has been typically used to help asthma. It has a good history of helping asthma sufferers.

Minor Blue Dragon formula

The Minor Blue Dragon is a Chinese herbal formula. Another name for it is xiao-qing-long-tang, or XQLT.It's a blend of eight herbal medicines used to treat asthma for centuries in Asia

The XQLT formula has been used effectively for bronchial asthma for centuries and it is said to have an even more powerful bronchodilator effect than prescription drugs. This formulation contains ephedra, which has been banned in the US in diet formulas. However, ephedra in this formula is considered safe, since the formula only contains around 15% of this herb. The other ingredients in XQLT are paeonia alba, cinnamon, pinellia, ginger, schisandar, asarum, and glycyrrhiza.

Nutritional Supplements That Help Reduce Asthma

Antioxidants

In addition to the above herbs it is also important to take a good supply of antioxidants - especially vitamins A, C, and E, carotenoids, and selenium. Taking antioxidants helps to reduce the irritating effects of airborne free radicals, which can activate an asthma attack.

Magnesium

Magnesium has been shown to reduce the risk of developing asthma and might also be helpful in reducing asthma. Magnesium is also good for asthmatics because it helps to dilate the bronchioles. Also, make sure that plenty of water is drunk daily, which thins mucus. The recommended dosage of magnesium is 200-600 mg/day.

MSM

MSM has also proven useful for asthma aside from being beneficial for arthritis, allergies, fatigue, back pain, sinusitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and many other conditions. Start with 2000mg of MSM per day but be sure to take 50 to 150 micrograms of molybdenum daily since MSM needs molybdenum to activate it properly.

I was able to find a product that already has the proper molybdenum in the MSM, which makes it convenient to take just one pill. Go to google and put in the words "MSM molybdenum" and you will find some web sites that sell this MSM combination.

Reducing Arthritis Joint Pain

Using Essential Fatty Acids for Reducing Arthritis Joint Pain

Rudy Silva

Essential fatty acids provide protection for the whole body. In particular it is effective in reducing inflammation as experienced in joint pain or arthritis.

Most people will have to deal with arthritis especially as they get older. One way to eliminate or minimize this pain is to supplement with the essential fatty acids.

Osteoarthritis, the most common arthritis, is not the only arthritis that affects so many people:

* rheumatoid arthritis

* arthritis from lupus

* gout

* psoriatic arthritis

* reiter̢۪s disease

* infective arthritis

As you age, the constant movement of the joints creates wear and tear. Toxic wastes that circulate in the blood, dead cells, and liquid can accumulate in the various joints and cause inflammation and pain. Continual inflammation can cause damage to the joints. In some cases the cartilage that coats the bone ends, wears down and joints then rub bone to bone causing extreme pain.

Using the essential fatty acids provides lubrication for the joints as the move against each other. This reduces the wear that can occur at these joints and this results in less inflammation.

There are several conditions and lifestyles that contribute to arthritis,

* Obesity

* Diabetes

* Heredity

* Poor nutrition

* Poor digestion

* Lack of water

* Allergies

* Repetitive use of fingers, hands, legs or arms

* Body injuries – sports or accidents

Arthritis is a difficult disease to treat because there is usually more than one cause. Just working on one cause may not help enough to give pain relief. But it always helps to know the many things that contribute to arthritis so that different nutritional and lifestyles changes can be made.

The use of flax seed oil, omega-3, is known to provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Omega-3 breaks down into prostaglandins. It is the prostaglandins that provide the anti-inflammatory results.

So by using the omega-3, GLA, and EPA/DHA supplements, you can get some relief from arthritis. These oils reduce inflammation and pain and provide lubrication, thereby preventing some damage from occurring in your joints.

It is recommended that you use a good dose of,

* Borage oil

* Primrose oil

* NKO oil

Using these oil spread across the day, provides the benefit of feeling reduce joint stiffness and pain in the morning. Use the different oils one bottle at a time. This gives you the health benefits that these different oil provide.

One additional benefit to using these oils is the coating protection that GLA has in the stomach lining.

The standard treatment for arthritis is the use of NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors. These, however, have undesirable side effects such as attacking the stomach lining. Thousands of deaths and visits to the emergency are associated with the use of NSAIDs.

You can benefit greatly if you use NSAIDs by adding GLA oils to your diet and help to prevent the serious side effects of the NSAIDs.

There you have it. Eat the essential fatty acids and provide your body with what it needs to build strong and healthy joints.

Acupuncture for Infertility

Infertility Acupuncture - Is it Really Beneficial?

By Swadesh Rohilla

Accupuncture is a well known technique which is used to overcome several diseases for thousands of years. Whether it is regulating the flow of blood or stimulating the nervous system, acupuncture has proved to be quite efficient in curing all of these problems in a precise manner. So, what about Infertility acupuncture?

Although it sounds something crazy to cure the infertility by the means of acupuncture, but still it's true. In order to support this statement, here are the conclusions of a survey which was conducted by the German researchers. This survey was related to 160 women who were unable to conceive and going through the process of in vitro fertilization. During this survey, half of these women were given the regular treatment of acupuncture. And a result, success rate of pregnancy were higher in these women than that of who were just given in vitro fertilization.

Now, the question emerges how Infertility acupuncture works? Simply, it just regulates the systems of your body by the means of increasing flow of blood towards all the parts of body including sexual organs. Accupuncture Treatment for Headaches

Accupuncture for Headache Patients

By Juliet Cohen

Acupuncture is a popular complementary treatment for various pain syndromes. Acupuncture is an effective treatment for chronic headaches. Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into the skin at precise points in the body. It has been shown to help with nausea and pain and has been known to help women undergoing fertility treatments to conceive. Acupuncture is a component of the health care system of China. Acupuncture is widely used in the management of headaches. It can be applied as a single form of care, or as part of a comprehensive treatment program. Headaches and migraines come in many different flavors. Acupuncture, even when performed by the novice practitioner, is effective in providing temporary relief from the common symptoms of headaches and migraines. There are three constitutional patterns of headaches commonly seen in clinic. The first is what I will call a Qi Rising headache caused by too much Qi (energy) rising to the head. The Qi Rising headache presents with pain that is induced by or worsened with stress, or accompanied by irritability or frequent anger. Generally, the pain is on the temples or above the ears, but can also be behind the eyes, on the top of the head or at the base of the skull. When this headache presents with severe, throbbing or pounding pain, accompanied by symptoms of nausea or vomiting (stomach qi rising up) or visual lights

Patients receiving acupuncture experienced 22 fewer days of headache per year. Patients completed a standardized measure of health-related quality of life at baseline, and three and 12 months after starting the study. Damp headache includes a subset of Phlegm induced headaches that present in conjunction with allergies, sinus problems and head colds. Patients with this type of headache feel a pressure type pain in the head, often behind the eyes or in the sinuses. They may describe a band-like sensation, or a heavy-headed feeling, that may be accompanied by symptoms of poor concentration or ‘foggy’ headedness, poor appetite or heavy limbs. These Damp headache patients are walking barometers, and commonly report that the headache is worse with weather changes, particularly during cloudy or rainy weather. Acupressure practitioner reports that pressing for 60 seconds on the web space between the forefinger and thumb of the dominant hand erases headache in patients with migraine and tension-type headaches. The specific spot pressed should be the most tender point in the web area. The patient should then lie down for about 15 minutes. Acupuncture, hypnosis and biofeedback are all alternative ways to control pain. Acupuncture involves the insertion of tiny sterile needles, slightly thicker than a human hair, at specific points on the body.

Acupuncture refers broadly to a group of procedures that stimulate the skin. Acupuncture is widely used to prevent migraine attacks, but the available evidence of its benefit is scarce. Acupuncture (up to 15 sessions over 12 weeks) was compared with metoprolol (a standard migraine prophylaxis medication). Acupuncture use has been reported for treating and alleviating a variety of ocular conditions. One randomized controlled double-masked study was found that examined the use of acupuncture for dry eye. Needles, 36-gauge, were inserted subcutaneously without penetrating the cartilage, and left in place 30 minutes without any manipulation or stimulation. The total number of treatments ranged from 2-11; the average number was 5. Frequency of treatment was 2-3 times a week, with the number of treatments determined by patient requirements. Acupuncture was no more effective than sham acupuncture in reducing migraine headaches although both interventions were more effective than a waiting list control. Acupuncture is not only effective for migraine headaches, but also works very well with tension headaches, cluster headaches, post-traumatic headaches, and disease-related headaches that might be due to sinus problems, high blood pressure or sleeping disorders. The greatest advantage of acupuncture over Western medicine is that it does virtually no harm. Some medications can have serious side effects and can (in some instances) actually lead to patients experiencing a "rebound" headache.
